the author consulted a much greater multitude of publications than what is listed below, the following selection has been
limited to only those which were directly mentioned or quoted from in
the essay; leaving anything un-cited to the realm of general
knowledge, or that which is easily verified. Indeed, the overall
scope of reference involved in this work was, itself, something of an
exercise in limitation — being mainly restricted to the author's
own personal library, with the thought of reigning in a potentially
interminable subject at the expense of the aid of certain resources
and insights. It is hoped, though not expected, that the results
